Representative Experience
Mr. Hay has over three decades of experience in
paleoseismology and engineering geology. He is an accomplished structural
geologist, who, prior to retirement from academia, divided his time
between teaching, research, and professional consulting work. With
support of the National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program (NEHRP),
he has received numerous research grants as a principal investigator
in the study of active and potentially active faults in California
that include the San Andreas, Hayward, Calaveras, White Wolf, Pleito,
San Gabriel, and the Sargent-Berrocal fault systems. These paleoseismic
fault studies have led to new understanding of the Quaternary behavior
of these fault systems. He also participated in important landslide
studies, such as the Big Rock Mesa, Rambla Pacifico, and Anaheim
Hills landslides in Southern California. He conducted field mapping
and assessments of lineaments and faults near Pardee Dam in the
central Sierra Nevada for the East Bay Municipal Utility District.
As part of this study, Mr. Hay performed detailed mapping of fault
zone exposures in very old rocks, and developed criteria to distinguish
recent fault movement from ancient fault movement.
